Your images never leave this tab.
Open your browser's developer tools, switch to the Network tab, and convert a file. You will see the encoder and its WebAssembly module load from this domain the first time, and then nothing — no upload, no image data, no request carrying your file anywhere. Turn off your Wi-Fi after the page loads and it still works.
PNG is a lossless format, which is exactly why it is so often the wrong choice for the web. It stores every pixel faithfully — including the ones nobody will ever notice — and the file size reflects that.
WebP gives you both options in one format. Its lossless mode compresses flat-colour images like logos, icons and screenshots roughly 26% smaller than PNG while keeping every pixel identical. Its lossy mode handles photographs that were mistakenly saved as PNG, where savings of 70-90% are routine.
Transparency works in both modes. WebP carries a full alpha channel, so a PNG with a soft drop shadow or an anti-aliased edge converts cleanly.
Frequently asked questions
- Does converting PNG to WebP keep transparency?
- Yes. WebP supports a full 8-bit alpha channel, the same as PNG, so transparent and semi-transparent pixels survive the conversion intact. You can also tune how hard the alpha channel is compressed under Advanced.
- Should I use lossless or lossy for a PNG?
- It depends what is in the image. Screenshots, logos, icons, diagrams and anything with flat colour and hard edges should use Lossless — WebP's lossless mode typically beats PNG by 20-30% with zero quality change. Photographs saved as PNG should use lossy, where the savings are usually 70% or more.
- Why is my WebP bigger than the original PNG?
- This happens with very small images, or images that were already heavily optimised by a tool like oxipng or pngquant. It can also happen if you pick lossless mode for a photograph. Try lossy mode, or raise the effort setting to 6.
- Will the conversion change my colours?
- In lossless mode, no — the pixels are identical. In lossy mode, WebP converts to YUV colour, which can very slightly shift saturated colours. If you notice this on brand colours or flat graphics, turn on Sharp YUV, or switch to lossless.
- Is there a limit on how many PNGs I can convert?
- No. There is no file size cap and no file count cap. Because the work happens on your own machine, the only real limit is how much memory your browser has. Files are processed a few at a time so a large batch does not exhaust it.
Other conversions
Each converter opens with the right output format already selected, so the file you drop comes back in the format you came for.
