Open your browser's developer tools, switch to the Network tab, and convert a file. You will see the encoder and its WebAssembly module load from this domain the first time, and then nothing — no upload, no image data, no request carrying your file anywhere. Turn off your Wi-Fi after the page loads and it still works.
This is a conversion you do for compatibility, not compression. AVIF is the better codec — typically 20-30% smaller than WebP at matched quality — so converting away from it will usually give you a bigger file.
The reason to do it anyway is support. AVIF is newer, and outside of browsers the tooling has not caught up. Older Photoshop versions, most email clients, many CMS upload validators and a good deal of desktop software will accept WebP and reject AVIF.
If your target does not accept WebP either, switch the output to PNG or JPEG at the top of the settings panel.
Frequently asked questions
- Isn't AVIF better than WebP?
- Generally yes, on compression — AVIF is typically 20-30% smaller than WebP at matched quality, especially at low bitrates. Converting AVIF to WebP will usually produce a larger file. You would do it for compatibility, not for size.
- Why would I convert AVIF to WebP then?
- Because something you need to use will not open AVIF. Older Photoshop and Office versions, many email clients, a lot of CMS upload validators, and plenty of desktop tools support WebP but not AVIF. WebP has had universal browser support for years longer.
- Will I lose quality?
- Some, since this is a lossy-to-lossy conversion. Use quality 90 or above to keep the loss negligible, or turn on lossless if the source is a graphic rather than a photograph. Check the result in the Compare view before committing to a batch.
- Does my browser need to support AVIF?
- It helps but is not required. We try the browser's own decoder first, and fall back to a WebAssembly AVIF decoder when the browser cannot handle the file. Either way the conversion happens locally.
