JPG is often the wrong destination for a GIF
Worth saying before you convert, because the mismatch is real.
GIFs are almost always graphics: logos, screenshots, reaction images with captions, diagrams, pixel art. That material is made of hard edges and flat colour, and JPEG compression is designed for the opposite — smooth photographic gradients. Run a captioned meme through it and you get a faint halo around every letter.
PNG is the better conversion for nearly all of that. It is lossless, the edges stay clean, and one-bit GIF transparency survives.
Convert to JPG when the system you are feeding takes JPG and nothing else — still common in older CMS uploaders, forums and print submission portals — or when the GIF happens to hold a photograph.

Animated GIFs give you the first frame
JPEG has no concept of animation. This converter decodes the first frame, encodes that, and warns you the rest were dropped — rather than quietly producing a still and letting you find out later.
Quality settings matter more here than usual
The default of 82 is tuned for photographs, and a GIF usually is not one.
- Text, logos, line art, flat colour: raise quality to 92 or higher, or use PNG instead. Ringing around hard edges is the first artifact you will notice.
- Photographic GIFs: 82 is fine, and the file will be far smaller than the GIF was.
Remember the image has already been through one reduction. A GIF holds at most 256 colours, so the palette damage happened long before this conversion. Raising the JPEG quality prevents further loss; it cannot repair the earlier kind.
Transparency does not survive
JPEG has no alpha channel — no setting changes this, because the format has no field for it. A GIF with a transparent background will not keep it — those areas are composited onto white. If that matters, convert to PNG, or to WebP if you want transparency and a small file at the same time.

- How do I convert GIF to JPG for free?

- What happens to an animated GIF?
- Only the first frame is converted, and you get a warning saying so rather than a silently flattened file. JPEG has no animation support, so there is no honest alternative — the format simply has nowhere to store the remaining frames.
- Should I convert a GIF to JPG or PNG?
- PNG, in most cases. GIFs are usually graphics, logos, screenshots or memes with text — content built from hard edges and flat colour, which is exactly what JPEG compresses worst. PNG is lossless and keeps it crisp. Choose JPG when the destination accepts nothing else, or when the GIF is a photographic image where JPEG's compression is a real win on size.
- What happens to transparency?
- It cannot be kept. GIF supports one-bit transparency and JPEG supports none at all, so transparent pixels are composited onto white before encoding. If your GIF has transparent areas and you need them, convert to PNG instead.
- Will the JPG look worse than the GIF?
- It can, and on the wrong material it will. The GIF was already reduced to 256 colours, and JPEG then compresses those flat colour areas in a way that produces visible ringing around hard edges — so text and line art can come out noticeably muddier. Raising the quality slider to 92 or above helps considerably. For that kind of image, PNG avoids the problem entirely.
- Why is my JPG larger than the GIF was?
- It happens with simple graphics. GIF's palette compression is very efficient on flat colour with few shades, and JPEG's is not — JPEG expects photographic gradients. On a photographic GIF the JPG will be much smaller; on a two-colour logo it may well be bigger.
- Can I batch convert GIFs?
