Why AVIF files strand you
AVIF is a still image wrapped in the AV1 video codec, and it is very good — routinely half the size of a JPEG at the same visual quality, with alpha and high dynamic range support that JPEG never had. Websites adopted it quickly for exactly that reason, which is how one ended up in your downloads folder.
The problem is everything that is not a browser. AVIF only reached wide browser support around 2023, and desktop software lags browsers badly. Older Windows and macOS builds have no decoder at all, plenty of image editors do not recognise the extension, and a great many upload forms reject it.
JPG is the opposite in every respect: thirty years old, patent-free, and readable by literally everything.

Expect a bigger file
This conversion runs against the grain of compression. AVIF is one of the most efficient formats in existence and JPEG is one of the least, so the JPG will usually be two to three times the size of the AVIF it came from. That is not a fault in the conversion — it is the price of universal compatibility.
If size matters more than reaching ancient software, WebP is the better destination. It is nearly as efficient as AVIF and has been supported everywhere for years.
Transparency does not survive
JPEG has no alpha channel. AVIF does, and images pulled from websites often use it, so any transparent areas are composited onto white on the way out. If yours has transparent areas, convert to PNG instead — it stores a full 8-bit alpha channel and keeps them intact.
Nothing is uploaded
The AVIF decoder and JPEG encoder both run inside this browser tab as WebAssembly. There is no server here and no upload endpoint, so the images stay on your machine — load the page once and you can convert with the network disconnected entirely.

- Why won't my computer open AVIF files?
- Because AVIF is genuinely new. It is built on the AV1 video codec and only reached broad browser support around 2023, and desktop software moves much more slowly than browsers do. Older Windows and macOS releases have no decoder, and a great deal of image editing and CMS software still does not recognise the extension. Browsers got there first, which is exactly why you can convert the file in one and not open it outside.
- Will the JPG be bigger than the AVIF?
- Almost certainly, and often by two or three times. AVIF is one of the most efficient still image formats available and JPEG is one of the oldest, so the same picture at the same visual quality takes considerably more room as a JPG. You are trading file size for the ability to open the file.
- Does converting lose quality?
- Slightly. AVIF is usually lossy, so the image was compressed once already, and encoding it as JPG compresses it again from the decoded pixels. At the default quality of 82 this is hard to see on a photograph. Raise the slider to 92 or above if the image is going to be edited or printed.
- What happens to transparency?
- It cannot be kept. AVIF supports an alpha channel and JPEG does not, so transparent areas are composited onto white before encoding. If your AVIF has transparency you need, convert to PNG instead, which stores alpha properly.
- Can I convert several AVIF files at once?
